The Emperors Grief

The Taj Mahal

On June 16, 1631, Mumtaz Mahal died after giving birth to her fourteenth child. Shah Jahan was heartbroken. He refused to appear in public. He thought about giving up his throne and going to live alone.
But even in his grief, Shah Jahan
began plans for a magnificent tomb, the Taj Mahal. It would sit in a peaceful garden on the banks of the Yamuna River in Agra. It would have a beautiful dome that shone in the sunlight and glowed in the moonlight. The tomb would represent paradise-the new home of his beloved queen.
