Visitors to Rome, Italy, never find themselves short of things to see and do. Rome has been a city for more than two thousand years. Ancient ruins lie amid the city’s historic hills. The Vatican City is a tiny, independent state within the city of Rome. It is the center of the Roman Catholic Church. The leader of the church, the pope, lives in the Vatican. Many visitors from all over the world come to see the Vatican’s buildings and art treasures. Among those buildings is Saint Peter’s Basilica. The basilica is Rome’s most famous church. It is the largest Christian church in the world.
