In early 1996, Greek State Railways (OSE) placed an order with Siemens as the general contractor to build six high-performance locomotives.

These were the first electric locomotives in Greece. In late 1997, a follow-up order was signed for another 24 locomotives. The multi-system locomotives 120 are used to establish a link with the European railway  network on the route from Thessaloniki to the border with the Former Yugoslavian Republic of Macedonia (F.Y.R.O.M.).
