Scarlet Rosefinch, Carpodacus crythrinus. Rare visitor, mainly east coast and Shetland.
DESCRIPTION
: 6 inches. Sexes differ. When seen in Britain birds are in brown autumn plumage, rather like female 30 but with two pale wing-bars; throat is streamed. Male as shown resembles 20 but without crossed mandibles.
VOICE
: Double canary-like call-note.
HABITS
: Shortnecked posture said to be characteristic, like small 23. British visitors occur in open, treeless country where they perch on fence-wires, may be confused with (in Britain) 20 (male, in summer), 23, 30 (female).
