Magpie, Pica pica. Resident; general England, Wales, Ireland, Man, but local or absent in Scotland. Frequents agricultural land and suburbia; not in large woods. DESCRIPTION: 19 inches (half of it tail). Sexes alike. Distinctive pied appearance.
: Angry chattering call most commonly heard. More musical notes in spring.
Feeds much on ground, walking or hopping when excited. Perches high in trees showing unmistakable, long-tailed silhouette, also obvious in rather slow flapping flight.
