Hawfinch, Coccothraustes coccothraustes. Resident, local in England, Wales, and southern Scotland. Thick woodland, large gardens and orchards.
DESCRIPTION: 7 inches. Sexes much alike. Stout, short-tailed big-headed finch with massive bill. In flight white wing bar and tail border show up. Female paler and duller generally. Juvenile shows barnng and has no black bib.
VOICE
: Usually recognized by chip call, rather like that of 102.
HABITS
: Elusive and skulking, especially in breeding season. Sometimes appears on tree-tops and on fruiting bushes when extracting seeds. Seldom on ground, where it hops, but can be attracted to water, may be confused with 12, 20.
