Goldfinch, Carduelis carduelis

Goldfinch, Carduelis carduelis. Resident and summer visitor, now fairly general except northern Scotland. Gardens, orchards, hedgerows, avenues; riverside alders and waste ground in winter.
: 5 inches. Sexes alike. Adult plumage unique. Juvenile is streaky and has no head pattern, but wing as adult.
Musical call note defies description but once associated with bird is diagnostic; also a loud double alarm note. Musical-box song recalls canary.
HABITS: Typically flits about in parties, perching on thistles and other seed-heads; sometimes on ground where it hops. Rocks in autumn and for roosting.
